Congratulations to Kirstin Augdahl (12) and Caitlin Gilliland (12) on advancing to the MSHSL State Swimming Tournament!

Here are the comments from Coach Kristen Nicholson – congratulations Coach!

Kirstin Augdahl had a great day on Saturday at the Section Finals in Willmar. Kirstin focused on the 500 free (that was going to be her race) and went out and made it happen by swimming under the state cut! She had a 7 second drop from the times she was swimming this season. That's fantastic!

Caitlin Gilliland swam the state cut in the 500 free, as well in Willmar. She didn't drop much time which is fine because this weekend will be her moment to post her best times! She's a competitor and will rise to the top when faced with a challenge.

http://www.tommiesports.com/mcc/news/Blog_1121.html

(Article from Tommiesports.com)
Now that's what you call a dominating season for a college athlete. St. Thomas senior Ben Sathre won all five races he entered this fall, the latter with a wire-to-wire win at Saturday's NCAA Championships. In a field of 280 runners, Sathre ran a career-best 23:44 time for 4.97 miles -- just two seconds off the meet-record time of 23:42.3 set in 1999 by Puget Sound’s Dave Davis. He edged out the runner-up by five seconds.

Sathre bolted to the lead by the 400-meter mark and was in command most of the way. Over the last 500 yards his mettle was tested but he held off a fast-closing Lee Berube of SUNY-Geneseo.

"I don't think it has really sunk in for me yet, it's tough to comprehend how huge this is for me," Sathre said on Sunday. Coach Pete Wareham recorded two top-five individual finishes at cross country nationals for St. Thomas in the mid-1990s, so he can appreciate the difficulty of back-to-back top-two finishes.

"In 30 years in Division III cross country, I've never seen anyone break from the entire field at the gun and totally dominate the field, yet rise to the occasion when he was challenged late in the race," Wareham said.

Historical Win
Sathre is the first Tommie men's cross country runner in the last 25 seasons to become a three-time CC All-America, and is the 55th St. Thomas individual to win a national title.

He's also just the third Minnesota male collegian (and second MIAC runner) to win an NCAA cross country crown. Carleton's Dale Kremer was NCAA Division III champ in 1976 and 1977 when the Knights were members of the Midwest Conference. St. Thomas' Nic Mancui was the Division III champion in 1982.

After his NCAA region victory and his national runner-up finish last November, Sathre explained that he's always felt like he's had something to prove. It stems from a perceived recruiting snub by college scholarship programs after his high-school days at Chaska.

Sathre placed 51st at the 2007 Minnesota large-class state cross country meet for the Hawks as a senior. He ran a promising 9:37 time the next spring for 3,200 meters, but it still wasn't enough to draw top-level recruiting interest.

"Four years ago I wrote out my goal on paper and signed my name to it," Sathre said. "I think its important to set big goals that are unrealistic. I don't see anything fun about setting (simply) realistic goals. When I was a senior in high school and wasn't that good, I spoke with Pete (Wareham) and he said I should aim for being all conference in the MIAC by my junior year, and I was like, 'Forget that, I want to be a national champion.' Even Pete thought it was absurd, if I remember correctly."

Sathre overcame a serious leg injury last April that knocked him out of outdoor track and limited his summer workouts.

"I am stunned that I was able to do this without much summer training," he said, "but I sometimes forget just how much effort I spent in the pool and on the stationary bikes this past summer."

Sathre has won cross country races in six different states -- New Jersey, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio.

In his 14 cross country races over the last three seasons, he has 12 top-five places and also took 26th at the 2009 national meet.

The Chaska Knowledge Bowl team traveled to Little Falls to the Lucky Lindy Tournament. It is a great way to see some out-state competitors before the state playoffs.

Chaska Varsity took 1st and 4th place and Chaska JV took 2nd (losing by a half of one point!) and 4th.

The team is showing great depth and consistency this year.

If you see any of the 50 kids that play knowledge Bowl this year, congratulate them and ask them about the individual team names they choose! This year they chose collective nouns (like a pride of lions or a pod of dolphins). While no one wanted to be Chaska Pride, Chaska Murder of Crows, Unkindness of Ravens and Sleuth of bears have been at the top all year with the JV Chaska Ascension of Larks gaining speed!

Congratulations to the Chaska Knowledge Bowl team for winning 1st place in Regionals. There were 92 teams in contention this year and 1st was no small accomplishment for this team! (Our competition schedule is location-based, the size of the school does not matter.) We also had a team take 4th place as well. In fact, 1/5th of the regional qualifying teams were from Chaska!

Teams that placed in the top 6 go on to State in April. We will have two teams representing Chaska at the State Meet.

Congratulations to Coaches Stone, Lenius and Crannell!

The CHS Speech Team had another great weekend of Speech this week. Our students put up a good fight, and seniors Amber Atkinson, and Katie Henning with Ben Thompson Isaac advanced through to Semi-finals on Saturday.

On Saturday we travelled with the whole team to Eagan high school for the Eagan Wildcat Invitational along with NFL semi-finals and finals. At the invitational tournament we took home 8 individual awards. Students placing were:

2nd - Huy Nguyen, Creative Expression
2nd - Briana Killgore, Poetry
5th - Kayla Peters, Storytelling
5th - Kayla Peters, Humorous
5th - Sam Morris and Jesse Aland, Duo
6th - Camille Dayrit, Drama

At the same time, our two entries (Amber, Katie, and Ben) competed in semi-finals for the NFL District Tournament. After competing, Katie and Ben did not advance through to the final round, but took home the award for 11th place overall in Duo Interpretation.

Senior Captain Amber Atkinson made Chaska history by being the first CHS student to advance to the final round of competition at this level of tournament. After 7 grueling rounds of competition, Amber placed 5th overall in Drama and is the 1st Alternate to the National NFL Tournament in Indianapolis in June.

Our NFL district is ranked as the 18th best district in the country out of over 200 districts. Placing in the top 6 is an incredible accomplishment, and we are extremely proud of Amber.

Way to go and Soar Hawks!

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials field is nearly complete following the Greco-Roman and women's freestyle portions of the Final Olympic Trials Qualifier on Sunday, April 1, at the University of Northern Iowa-Dome.
Chaska High School graduate Patrick Smith was among 14 wrestlers in Greco-Roman to earn spots at the Olympic Trials, set for April 21-22 in Iowa City.
The top two finishers in each weight class in Cedar Falls, who haven't previously qualified, earned berths into the Olympic Trials.
Smith, who missed qualifying for the Trials by one spot in a tournament in December, placed second in the 66 kg/145.5 pound weight class. He lost to Ravaughn Perkins 3-2, 2-1.
Also scheduled to wrestle at the U.S. Olympic Trials is Chaska native Andy Bisek, who is one of the favorites at 74 kg/163 pounds. The winner of each weight class advances to London this summer.
"I've definitely thought about it a lot recently," Bisek said about the possibility of competing at the Olympics to TheMat.com. "I try not to think about it too much though. I just want to go and do well, putting as little pressure on myself as possible and get the job done."
"That weight class is tough and has a lot of close guys," USA Wrestling Greco-Roman National Coach Steve Fraser said to TheMat.com. "I can't predict how he's going to do, but I think that the guy that comes is going to have to bring their ‘A' game for sure. I think if he brings his ‘A' game he will have as good a shot as anybody to make the team."

Sixty-six Chaska High School French students participated in the annual A Vous La Parole French speaking contest held in Coffman Union at the University of Minnesota on Wednesday, April 25. Sponsored annually by the Minnesota Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French, with the support of the University of Minnesota Department of French and Italian, the contest recognizes excellence in French speaking skills. This year’s contest drew more than 1200 entries, a record number, among students in grades 7-12.

The various categories include prose and poetry recitations, theater presentations, song performances, extemporaneous reading, extemporaneous conversation, as well as original skits. Students are given ratings based on a four-star system with four stars earning them a blue medal, three stars earning a red medal, and two stars earning a white medal. All participants receive a certificate of participation regardless of their particular rating.

Chaska students did very well at the contest! There were 29 blue ribbons, 17 red ribbons and 12 white ribbons awarded for their efforts. Félicitations à tous!
