Jan. 26 >> Schools plan special reading activities for February
February is designated as "I Love to Read" month so reading-related activities are scheduled at several schools in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191.

At Vista View Elementary School in Burnsville, the theme will be "The Art of Books: A Picture is Worth One-Thousand Words!" The focus will be on learning about illustrators, the Caldecott Medal for outstanding illustrated book of the year and how illustrations help carry a story or the information in a book. Each classroom will choose one award-winning illustrator and book to study in depth and will complete a project related to that illustrator. Local authors will talk about their books and every student will have the chance to read to Principal Susan Risius. Family Literacy Night will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Neill Elementary School in Burnsville will celebrate I Love to Read Month by inviting a variety of guest readers to share their love of reading with students. Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz, Principal Elizabeth Vaught, Burnsville City Council Member Mary Sherry, police officers, Neill parents and others will talk about their jobs and explain why reading is important to them. The guest readers will also read books to students.

At Hidden Valley Elementary School in Savage, the theme for "I Love to Read" month is based on Dr. Seuss's book "Oh, the Places You'll Go." A calendar suggests reading activities for families to enjoy on every day of the month. Breakfast with a Book will take place at 8 a.m. on Feb. 9 with families coming in to read with their children and enjoy breakfast treats.

At William Byrne Elementary School in Burnsville, author and illustrator Nancy Carlson will be a special guest. There will be three scheduled times for Drop Everything and Read throughout the month, giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy quiet reading time. Other activities will include a book fair, book swap and breakfast with a book event.

At Sioux Trail Elementary School in Burnsville, the theme will be a winter wonderland. Milk jugs have been collected and a giant "jugloo" has been created for students to read in. Other reading activities will also be related to winter in Minnesota.

M.W. Savage Elementary in Savage has planned Read-a-thon activities on Feb. 10. Grade levels will have "reading events" throughout the day with teachers reading aloud to classes at grade levels before their own.

Rahn Elementary School of Arts and Technology in Eagan has planned is first annual Rahn Read-A-Thon on Friday, March 2, when every student will read for 120 minutes straight. Students will be asking for pledges and the goal is to raise $10,000. "Rahn is participating in many different reading activities during I Love to Read month and this Read-A-Thon is a way to culminate our love of reading and to celebrate," said second grade teacher Aran Hartl, an organizer of the event.

Harriet Bishop Elementary will have the theme "Team ... Read!" Students can decorate pennants and medals that will be displayed around the school. There will be a drawing each week and two students will get to “Read to Principal Nelson." The school will also hold a trivia contest each week with two classrooms winning the Wizard’s Cup trophy. Parents are welcome to come in to read to their students' classes during Media time.
