WHAT CAN SCHOOLS DO?
Want to start integrating Web 2.0 and digital technologies into your schools-or ramp up existing efforts-but don't know where to begin? Use this list as a guide:
1. Give principals and superintendents more training and support to move their schools forward into the digital, global era.
2. Use quick walk-throughs and/or a full instructional audit to determine how often students are collaborating in groups, solving problems, or using digital technologies and digital literacies as part of their learning.
3. Provide training and discussion opportunities that move teachers away from current instructional practices that emphasize mastery of low-level content.
4. Begin piloting 1:1 laptop programs and online coursework, particularly for students who are struggling in traditional classroom environments.
5. Harness the power of digital technologies to spark student interest, provide a safe online learning environment, facilitate connection and creativity, and create new options for sharing academic learning.
6. Connect teachers with other educators online via RSS readers, professional social networks, and other tolls that can enhance job-related learning.
7. Expect every teacher every year to learn how to effectively integrate one or two new technology tools into their classroom practice.
8. Be willing to give up some control. Put aside ego or fear issues and enlist students as co-learners and co-constructors of knowledge. Respect their abilities and they will invariably amaze you with what they can do.
