Goodhue Shines at Regional Envirothon Competition

In its third year of existence the Goodhue Envirothon teams continued their success from the past seasons and had three of the top four teams in the competition at North Alexander Park in Faribault, MN. There were 10 teams in this year's regional competition which includes an 8 county area in southeastern Minnesota. Envirothon is an outdoor competition in which students are tested in five different knowledge areas: soils, water, forestry, wildlife and special topic. This year's special topic was on rotation grazing and how to create a sustainable farm that is both energy and cost effective. The students also create an oral presentation based on an issue relating to this topic.
Goodhue Black placed 4th in the regionals which is made up of freshmen Casey Deneen, Sophomores Michael Poncelet, Jake Gilsdforf, and JamieThermos, and junior Matt Deneen. Goodhue Silver and Goodhue Purple placed 1st and 3rd in the competition and will represent the region at the state competition at St. John's Univeristy in Collegeville, MN. The winner at the state level travels to Montana for the national Envirothon competition. Goodhue Purple is made of seniors Libby Mills, Ashlyn Stecklin, Paige Hokanson, and Christyn Hokanson, with Matt Lexvold as the lone junior. Goodhue purple placed 2 points behind second place Rushford-Peterson. The champion of the region, Goodhue Silver, is made of sophomores Ethan Dressen, Billy Voth, and Holly Husband and freshmen Katelyn Stehr and Sam McNamara. Goodhue Silver also had the top presentation at the regional level. The teams are coached by Goodhue Science teacher Matt Halverson.
