MWS Kindergarten Orientation set for
January 30 @ 6 PM

The 10 elementary schools in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 have scheduled kindergarten orientations and information sessions for parents/guardians whose children will be starting kindergarten next fall. See the full schedule.

This is an opportunity to meet the principal and other staff members and hear about the curriculum and other programs that make each school unique. Parents/guardians can attend as many orientations as they wish.

Sessions are for parents only, except at Harriet Bishop, Edward Neill, M.W. Savage, Gideon Pond and Rahn where children are invited to attend.

Parents can learn in which attendance boundaries they live by using the District 191 SchoolFinder.

Children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2014, are eligible to start kindergarten in September. Parents/guardians will receive a kindergarten registration packet at kindergarten orientation sessions. Completed packets should be returned to the District 191 Welcome Center, located at the Diamondhead Education Center, 200 West Burnsville Pkwy.

If you are unable to attend an orientation, please come to the Welcome Center to register your student between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. For more information, contact the Welcome Center at (952) 707-4180 or .

State law requires that children complete an early childhood screening prior to starting school. This can be done by the school district at no cost to families. Call (952) 707-4100 to schedule an appointment.

E-News is Changing: Be sure you're getting the information you want

Our school is updating the way we send e-newsletters to parents. Starting in August 2013, instead of using a separate messaging system, we're going to use the email addresses already provided by parents through their students' health and emergency forms.

    M.W. Savage among schools lauded
    under new state measurements

Marion W. Savage Elementary was one of three schools in Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 that had something special to celebrate as the new school year kicked off this week. MWS was recognized as a "Reward" school under the state's new measurement of school performance called Multiple Measurements Rating (MMR). The designation means the school ranked in the top 15 percent of Minnesota elementary schools that receive Title 1 federal funding.

Under a federal waiver, Minnesota schools are no longer rated based only on the percentage of students making proficiency targets as they were under No Child Left Behind. Instead, the MMR includes student proficiency, growth in student achievement, and reduction in the achievement gap to rate a school's progress.

School District 191 does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, disability, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, sexual orientation, age, family care leave status or veteran status.
